Comprehensive Wellness Exam in San Antonio

Comprehensive Wellness Exam in San Antonio

What sets our San Antonio biological office apart is our ability to see the big picture. We take the time to discuss your previous experiences, what conditions are important to you, and what may have led you on this journey. A detailed history is important for identifying factors that contribute to one's oral health.

Precise Imaging

Our Wellness Exam consists of a 3-D X-ray to evaluate the anatomical structures of the head and neck, the airway, and any hidden infections. We pair this with photos of the teeth and 2-D high definition x-rays. A comprehensive periodontal (gum) evaluation is used to determine your levels of inflammation and what type of cleaning is best.

pH Saliva Testing

Your Wellness Exam also includes an evaluation of the acidity levels of the mouth. Do not eat 60 minutes prior to the exam.

HbA1c Screening

To evaluate your healing ability, systemic inflammation and periodontal risk, we also perform a blood sugar screening. Your body’s ability to utilize glucose directly impacts our treatment and nutritional recommendations.

Airway Assessment

Every patient also receives an airway assessment which includes a breathing assessment, sleep questionnaire, and reviewing the airway anatomy in 3D imaging. Your ability to breathe directly impacts brain health, energy, hormones, digestion, recovery – Literally, every system!

Biocompatible Materials

We are mindful of the impact dental materials can have on the body. For this reason, we prioritize materials selected for biocompatibility, durability, and long-term tissue health.

Whenever possible, we use BPA-free composite materials and minimize the use of metals within the oral environment. For patients seeking a more personalized approach, we also offer biocompatibility testing to assess immune reactivity to various dental materials and help guide treatment decisions.

Two-Phase Approach

We take a Two-Phase approach to your dental care. The first is the Clean-Up Phase. Our highest priority is to treat urgent needs such as infections, cavities, and sources of pathogenic bacteria. We also discuss the impact of existing dental materials, such as mercury fillings, root canals, metal crowns, and titanium implants. As we move into the Healing Phase, we place a high focus on nutrition, lifestyle adaptations, and quality sleep that are key for long-term health.

Adjunctive Diagnostics Available:

Bacterial Saliva Tests

Adjunctive diagnostics that are available include saliva testing for bacteria levels in the mouth. This may be of interest to you if you have a history of cavities or gum disease, or want to evaluate your risk of developing systemic diseases. We then develop a protocol to address these bacteria specifically.

Home Sleep Study

Rather than going to a lab to be hooked up to wires, we offer a medical-grade home sleep study that can provide information regarding your quality of sleep and if you get enough oxygen at night. This test can be used by sleep physicians to diagnose sleep apnea, as indicated.

Functional Testing

When one suffers from recurrent tooth and gum issues, there may also be underlying mineral or nutritional deficiencies at hand. To determine what nutritional improvements may be necessary, functional lab testing may be indicated to plan how to optimize your oral health.

Biocompatibility Testing

Our bodies respond to the environment around us, especially if new materials are placed in direct contact like in the mouth. If using compatible materials that align with your immune system is important, we have the ability to test your immune system’s response against all dental materials. This allows us to use the material with the least systemic response.

Over the years, we have found our patients test very well for the majority of our materials, as we are very selective about the products we use.

FAQ:

Q: Is biological dentistry covered by insurance?

A: Many of the core services we provide — cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, and extractions — are covered by standard dental insurance the same as any general dental office, provided out-of-network benefits apply. Some of our more specialized services, such as biocompatibility testing, home sleep studies, and ozone therapy, may not be covered and would be discussed with you in advance.

Q: How is a biological dentist different from a holistic dentist?

A: The terms are often used interchangeably, and in practice there is significant overlap. Both approaches prioritize the connection between oral health and whole-body health, biocompatible materials, and minimally invasive treatment. "Biological" tends to emphasize the scientific and physiological basis of treatment decisions, while "holistic" often includes a broader focus on lifestyle, nutrition, and overall wellness. At our practice, we incorporate both.

Q: Do you use fluoride?

A: We do not use fluoride at our practice. Instead, we take a more comprehensive approach to cavity prevention, including our TMF Cavity Prevention Protocol. For patients seeking fluoride-free alternatives, we offer options such as hydroxyapatite.
