Adult Airway & Sleep in San Antonio

Adult Airway & Sleep in San Antonio

Healthy sleep and breathing are foundational to overall health, recovery, cognitive function, and nervous system regulation. Some of the most common concerns we hear from patients are fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep quality, low energy, and difficulty recovering from daily stress.

When the body does not receive adequate oxygen during sleep, it may remain in a more heightened “fight-or-flight” state instead of entering deeper restorative phases of sleep. Over time, poor breathing and sleep quality may contribute to inflammation, reduced recovery, and numerous systemic diseases.

Signs that may be associated with airway or sleep-related concerns in adults include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Fatigue or daytime sleepiness
  • Snoring
  • Mouth breathing
  • Clenching or grinding of teeth
  • TMJ discomfort, clicking, or popping
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

Adult Airway Development & Expansion in San Antonio, Texas

In some adults, airway concerns may be influenced by insufficient jaw development or limited space within the mouth for the tongue and airway structures.

Adult expansion therapies may help improve tongue space, breathing patterns, dental arch development, and overall function. Because adult bones are more mature and less adaptable than in childhood, treatment approaches differ significantly from pediatric growth guidance.

Depending on the individual’s needs, adult expansion may be accomplished using removable or fixed orthopedic appliances. Treatment planning is customized according to airway anatomy, jaw development, bite relationship, and overall health goals.

Throughout treatment, we also implement principles from our TMF G.R.O.W. Program to encourage whole-body health.

A Comprehensive Approach

We take a comprehensive approach that may include:

  • Airway evaluation
  • Sleep screening questionnaires
  • 3D imaging
  • Myofunctional therapy
  • Lifestyle and nutritional guidance
  • Collaboration with sleep physicians, ENTs, and other healthcare providers when indicated

Our goal is not simply to straighten teeth, but to identify factors that may be impacting breathing, sleep quality, and overall well-being. We believe proper breathing and restorative sleep can have a meaningful impact on energy and long-term health.

FAQ

Q: I don't want to use a CPAP. What are my other options?

A: This is one of the most frequently searched questions in sleep dentistry. For patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, oral appliance therapy is a well-established and effective alternative. For patients whose airway concerns are related to jaw development or tongue space, expansion therapy may address a root cause rather than simply managing the symptom. We evaluate each patient comprehensively and discuss all options, including coordination with your sleep physician, to find the approach that works best for you.

Q: Could my teeth grinding be related to my airway?

A: Yes — this connection is increasingly well supported by research. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is often the brain's way of activating the jaw muscles to reopen an airway that is becoming obstructed during sleep. If you grind your teeth at night and also experience fatigue, brain fog, or unrefreshing sleep, an airway evaluation is worth pursuing. Treating the airway concern often reduces or eliminates grinding more effectively than a nightguard alone.

Q: Can jaw expansion really help adults, or is it only for kids?

A: Adult expansion is more complex than pediatric growth guidance because adult bone is fully mature, but it is possible and increasingly well-supported by clinical evidence. Approaches such as removable and fixed orthopedic appliances can create additional tongue space and improve airway volume in adults. Treatment planning is more involved and highly individualized, but for the right candidate it can produce meaningful improvements in breathing, sleep quality, and overall function.
